Racca: Cornish Tunes for Cornish Sessions Project 1995 – 1997
The Racca Project recorded 146 traditional Cornish dance tunes and airs and a further 105 compositions from groups and individual performers involved with Cornish music between 1995 – 1997. The Editorial team comprised 0f Frances Bennet, Hilary Coleman, Nick Crowhurst, Merv Davey, Rosie Fierek and 43 individuals and groups contributed tunes to the project. Copies of the project were photocopied and made available at cost. In 2008 George Pritchard, webmaster for the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies provided a scanned version as a pdf file on the federation website and this is the version provided here.
Introduction to Racca 2: ” The notion of a Cornish tune book evolved during the “Tune Swap day” held at Fowey in February 1995. There had long been a demand for a book of Cornish dance music but an interest in collecting together a common repertoire of session tunes was also expressed. A small working group drawn from the participants of the Tune Swap day were ‘volunteered’! to take on this project. The aim was to collect the following: old and new Cornish tunes currently in vogue amongst traditional musicians and groups in Cornwall, and lesser known tunes that warrant an airing in the common repertoire. The result was the launch of RACCA. with 165 tunes, at Lowender Peran in 1995. Since then, musicians in Cornwall have submitted further traditional and modern tunes to bring the total to over 250- which are now published here in RACCA 2. All tunes submitted have been included and all tunes are published with chords. This book a non-profit making venture, was conceived out of love for the music of Cornwall and with the passionate desire to hear this music given the playing it deserves.”
