Introduction: In previous centuries carols were traditionally sung around the streets and farms in the Stratton area, memories of this having been documented by the Saunders/Jewell family of Stratton and the Tape family of Morwenstow. Other families had carols which they considered as ‘theirs’. Interest in preserving them has been shown, and Bude Stratton and District Old Cornwall Society have begun to sing them at Adventide. In 1991 Michael Richardson discovered an old hand-written booklet in a second-hand bookshop. This had belonged to Ethel Jewell née Saunders, a founder, and first President of our OCS. Then Bert Tape showed Michael some of the Morwenstow carols, and later Andrew Jewell presented the OCS with a copy of the Saunders/Jewell family’s Stratton Carols ‘to ensure that a record of an old Stratton tradition might survive’.
From these beginnings Michael has collected, arranged, and edited more carols and thanks are extended to the late Ivor Potter, Ray Shaddick, Joan Gerry, and Dorothy Gardiner. This book is the result. Carols migrate and we would stress that these are ‘as sung in this area’.
