The information in this potted history has been collected from many sources including the WEBF Website and its commemorative programmes.
It is a tribute to those who initiated this contest and to those who continue to run this very important festival for the benefit of the Cornish brass band community. Without it, Cornish banding would be much the poorer.

In 2001 Camborne (Derek Greenwood) took a year off but returned in 2002 to find it had no competition and took the Royal Trophy by default. Just for good measure the Band picked up second prize for deportment and Robert Jose (euphonium) was adjudged the Class “A” best-player. Best player in Festival awards went to Robert Jose (euphonium), Graham Barker (horn) and the Camborne set of basses – Tim Joslin, Graham Boag, Lee Trewhella and Jonathan Bond
“Town and village bands from all over Cornwall and beyond displayed their indominable spirit on Saturday evening as they proudly marched through mist and teeming rain to the applause of hundreds of onlookers huddled under umbrellas.” (Western Morning News)

“Duchy pulls plug on hat-trick winners. The Duchy of Cornwall notified the festival’s organisers that it would no longer provide the traditional medals awarded to players and conductor for recording a hat-trick… The hat-trick has been achieved on 13 occasions and although Camborne Town won the first three contests (the 1912 event did not count towards a hat-trick), St Dennis Band was the first to record a hat-trick and thereby receive the special medals.” (British Bandsman 14 June 2003)

“… with Andrew Teague taking on the role of promoter.” (WEBF Centenary Book)
Another hat-trick of wins was completed by Camborne Town Band in 2004 but on this occasion the players did not receive individual medals. Up to the year 2000 any band winning the Royal Trophy for three consecutive years were presented with a set of medals to commemorate the feat. The Duchy of Cornwall had
presented them but, after 90 years, it was felt to be an “Appropriate time to review this arrangement” (I think that’s a nice way of saying they were going to stop awarding them!). Camborne Town Band was in first place with a superb performance of The Essence of Time and the hymn tune Praise My Soul with
St Austell (D Loukes) in second place. Chris Leonard won the Class “A” best-player and best-player in Festival award for solo cornet. Best-player in Festival awards also went to Jeremy Squibb (soprano), Robert Jose (euphonium), Graham Barker (solo horn) and the Camborne set of basses – Shaun Thomas, Tim Joslin, Lee Trewhella and Eric Thomas.

“An entry of 28 bands was one of the highest in the history of the festival.” (WEBF Centenary Book)
Contest Music by Wilfred Heaton would not feature in a list of easy-listening music but a test it certainly is and in 2005 Frank Renton led Camborne to first place over Bodmin Town (K Mackenzie) and St Austell Town (D Loukes). Camborne had to be satisfied with second place for the march Roll Away Bet as Bodmin picked up first place. The Class “A” best-player award went to Nick Abbott (trombone) and Jeremy Squibb (soprano) picked up yet another best-player in Festival Award
as did the Camborne set of basses: Tim Joslin, Kevyn Caddy, Lee Trewhella and Eric Thomas. The day finished with the traditional march back through Bugle with the winning Royal Trophy band being last up and playing in the square. Camborne duly took its place and provided the perfect conclusion to an excellent day by playing three traditional brass band pieces before launching into a crowd-pleasing Is this the way to Amarillo?
“Bugle Contest is synonymous with brass banding and those who started the festival, and those who continue to organise it, have performed a tremendous service to Cornish banding – long may it continue.” (Tony Mansell in Camborne Town Band)

“The 86th contest had another bumper entry with 27 bands taking part and over 2000 spectators in attendance. An innovative move from the Festival Committee saw a Training Section introduced for the first time.” (WEBF Centenary Book)
In 2010 the festival announced the passing of two former officials and life members. Mel Hancock had served as secretary for almost 40 years and Tristan Scott had been chairman for over 20 years. (2010 Festival programme)

“… but the festival was tinged with sadness. During the day information had been received that the Cornish composer, Goff Richards, was gravely ill at his home in Cheshire. In a spontaneous gesture of affection and respect, after the last band had played, several hundred bandsmen gathered together to play his composition, A Special Place which was written by Goff to raise funds for the Children’s Hospice South West. Conducted by the Chairman of the Festival, Leonard Adams, the performance was relayed to Goff’s bedside by mobile phone.” (WEBF Centenary Book)

Geraint Richards appointed Festival Chairman (Photo: Tony Mansell 2018)
Geraint Richards succeeded Leonard Adams, who stood down after ten years in the post. In recognising the commitment and support Leonard gave to the festival during his term the festival has elected him a Life Vice President.
Geraint has a unique connection to the Festival as his Great Grandfather, F J P Richards, was the prime mover in the founding of the festival in 1912. He recalled, “Going to the Bank with 44 sovereigns in my pocket, each sovereign put up by committee and friends to ensure the Prize Money”. One of many long serving officials, he remained involved as Secretary and Promoter until his death in 1961. The first Festival was held in the grounds of Peniel on the outskirts of Bugle, a house which had been built by the Richards family and continued there until 1965.
In his position of Head Forester for the Duchy of Cornwall Geraint is involved in projects nationwide for HRH Duke of Cornwall, who is Patron of The West of England Bandsmen’s Festival and whose Great Uncle presented the unique Royal Trophy to the Festival in 1913.” (WEBF News 4/6/2017)
