The information in this potted history has been collected from many sources including the WEBF Website and its commemorative programmes.
It is a tribute to those who initiated this contest and to those who continue to run this very important festival for the benefit of the Cornish brass band community. Without it, Cornish banding would be much the poorer.

“… one of the Test Pieces was a march specially written for the Festival by Jon Hall entitled Molinnis Park.” (WEBF Centenary Book)
Camborne’s bad run came to an end in 1981 as it collected the Royal Trophy through a win with the test piece Freedom and a second place with the march, Molinnis Park. St Dennis was second, St Austell third and Mount Charles fourth. But it could have been so different. Derek Greenwood sustained a broken ankle a few days before the contest and he rejected a high stool preferring to stand and conduct. He had always said he would never win Bugle because he didn’t have any clay on his boots and, according to Eric Trerise, someone presented him with a paper bag of the stuff just before the contest and that did the trick.”

The weather was atrocious in 1986 but the bands played on and St Austell (Derek Greenwood) took top honours with Camborne (M Cotter) second for both pieces. Flowers, Gloucester was in third place and St Keverne (Derek Johnston) fourth out of the seven bands. A best player in Festival award went to Mark Medlyn (soprano). There was a disappointment for Redruth Town which had been placed third in the Championship Section March. The following day a phone call advised Leonard Adams that the Band was actually fifth but that the committee would not be seeking the return of the prize money.
Up to 1985 the Royal Trophy was awarded to the band securing the highest combined points for the two test pieces in Class “A” but a change in the rules meant that from 1986 the long-held practise of aggregating the points was discontinued. Two pieces were still played but the champion band would be the winners of the principal test piece. This change in rule also applied to the other classes.

The contest programme in 1989 refers to the death of Billy Moyle, a former Camborne player and Newquay Musical Director. As a tribute, one of his compositions, Cornish Cavalier, was included as a test piece in Class “B”. Camborne Town under Stephen Sykes took two first places in Class “A” with Bodmin Town under Leonard Adams collecting the runners up prize for both pieces. Bristol Telecom was in third place and Yorkley Onwards fourth. Best-player in Festival awards went to Shaun Thomas (euphonium).

“Torrential rain fell on the 67th festival.” (WEBF Centenary Book)
In 1991 Brass band de Bazuin from Oenkerk, Holland, was visiting Cornwall as Camborne’s guests and took part. It was placed third for A Kensington Concerto and first for Toccata from Suite Gothique. The Royal Trophy went to Bodmin Town under Leonard Adams. Aldbourne, Lydmet Lydney and Tredegar Bands made it four out of seven bands from “overseas!”

In 1993 Camborne Town was equal on points with Bodmin when both bands were awarded a first and second place with one point difference in each case. Under the old rules where the points were aggregated, they would have shared the Royal Trophy but by virtue of its win in the test piece, Carnival Overture, Camborne collected it and took it westward. The best-player in Festival awards went to Darren Hendy (solo cornet).

“The 70th contest saw the first outing of the distinctive blue and white awning for the stage. Crowds of more than 3,000 people attracted by an afternoon of open-air music and glorious weather turned the festival into a bumper event.” (WEBF Centenary Book)

Camborne and Bodmin were joint winners in 1998 but the Royal Trophy travelled west once again because of the Band’s first place in the main test piece. Stuart Chappell (flugel) won the Class “A” best-player award and the Camborne set of basses was judged to be the best in the festival.

Bugle Band Contest celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1999 and the committee reflected on the success of the event. It claimed to be the oldest contest in existence after the National Championships and Belle Vue and, “the only surviving outdoor contest from those early years of banding”. The programme stated, “Three bands competing today appeared at our first contest – Camborne, St Agnes and St Breward”. Disappointingly for such an occasion, only two bands entered the Championship Section. Camborne Town took two first places over Lucketts Travel and John Hitchens was the Class “A” best-player and the best euphonium player in Festival. Other winners of best player in Festival awards were Jeremy Squibb (soprano), Darren Hendy (solo cornet) and Graham Barker (solo horn). Following the march back through the village, Camborne, as Royal Trophy winners, played a mini concert in the square and brought the day to a close with Treskerby by Monty Pearce.

Camborne (F Renton) and Bodmin (N Childs) were equal on points again in 2000 but the Royal Trophy went to Camborne because of their first place in the test piece, The Land of the Long White Cloud; Mount Charles took the third place. There was a hatful of prizes for Camborne players as best-player in Festival awards went to Jeremy Squibb (soprano), Darren Hendy (solo cornet), Graham Barker (solo horn) and the Camborne set of basses. John Hitchens won the Class “A” best-player award and Christopher Leonard was presented with the E J Jacob Memorial Trophy – one of the A R Trudgian Youth Awards.
