Musical Director W. H. Maginn
Bill Maginn commenced playing at the age of 12 years, in a Liverpool Scout Band. He gained experience in the Edge Hill Band and then mainly with the famous Caramel Laird Band. Before coming to Cornwall, he gained a Diploma with Honours under the late Wood and conducted a Band and Orchestra in the Merseyside area. During his association with the Mount Charles Band, they have risen to Championship standard and are a fine entertaining concert band.
Here then, by public demand, is the Bands’ first record. Perhaps primarily aimed at holiday audiences, it fulfils a dual function, in that of giving our friends a souvenir of their holiday, and also affords interest to our own members and supporters. Hopefully, it will also enhance the reputation of what has become over the past few years, one of the most entertaining Concert Bands in Cornwall.
We sincerely hope this record will bring you many happy memories when perhaps there is time to remember and also lighten your life when the nights are dark and the sun is not so warm. Thank you for purchasing this record, as a small portion of the cost will help us to continue to make music for your and our enjoyment. The programme is light and of high entertainment value, comprising items popular with holiday audiences.
Historical notes state that the origin of the band goes back to 1900, under the auspices of The Charlestown Volunteers. The band moved into active service in France and Belgium and was later renamed Charlestown Territorial Army Band. It remained as such until after the 1945 war, when it broke away and split as a civilian band, moving to Mount Charles. It then became known as the Mount Charles Band.
The band is a mixture of both youth and experience, essential to the success of any organisation. A clash of ideas often occur, which is good for the band, as the freshness of youth mingled with the wisdom of experience blend together to produce a refreshing sound. This can only be said of your Cornish Summer Bandstand.
This recording was made in Penrice Comprehensive School, St.Austell, with kind permission of the Headmaster, Mr. Renowden and the Cornwall Education Authority.
Our thanks are due to the Executive Committee and all other Committee Members and Ladies, for without whose help the production of this record would not have been possible.
