ST. DENNIS MALE VOICE CHOIR has been in existence, as far as can be ascertained, since 1922. The Musical Director in those early years was Mr. Marsh Kessell, whose grandson sings with the choir today. When Mr. Kessell retired, Captain Hedley Martin took over and led the choir until the Second World War forced the members to disband. Mr. Stanley Treloar, now 86 and still singing in the bass section, reformed the choir in 1946, but his son Harold took over in 1947 for two years, after which he went to Canada. From 1949 the choir was conducted by Mr. A. E. Baker, Mr. Harrison and Mr. L. Stanaway until 1959, when Harold returned and once more became the Musical Director. The choir has broadcast both on B.B.C. Radio and Westward Television, and has won numerous competitions, but their increasing commitments for concerts have precluded them from competitions in recent years. Recruiting standards are very high and although, originally, the members of the choir all lived in the village of St. Dennis, the present members, who number 58, are drawn from a wider area. Soloist Jean Camps, who sings with the choir, is well known in Cornish music circles and has won many awards at music festivals. Perhaps a long service award should be given to our accompanist, Doris Bullock, who has been with the choir since 1947. We do hope you will enjoy this—our first record, as we present a varied selection of songs IN THE MALE VOICE MOOD.
