ST DENNIS BAND
St. Dennis Band, as the title of the CD suggests, is extremely proud of its heritage with early records traced to the mid 19th Century. Contest successes include 2″d Section National Champions at Crystal Palace in 1928 and Alexander Palace in 1938. In the Championship Section they have been eleven times The West of England Champions, and gained sixth place in The Royal Albert Hall at the 1978 National Finals. At The West of England Bandsmens Festival (Bugle) they have been The Royal Trophy winners on 29 occasions including five hat tricks. The Band has experienced highs and lows during its existence and following a decline in the mid 1990’s showed the determination that has always been present, concentrating their efforts on youth, which paid dividends, progressing from a group of young inexperienced players to the sounds you now hear. The Band qualified for the National Finals for the last four years, gaining promotion to the 2″d Section as from January 2005. They have won their respective Section at The Cornwall Brass Band Association Contest for the past three years, thus regaining Championship status for this event. At Harrogate in September 2004 the Band was declared National 3rd Section runners up, the live recording of the performance being the final track of this CD, which also contains popular items that has made them one of the most sought after Bands in the South West of England. Musical Director: BRIAN MINEAR is the 4d generation of a Brass Band family, and commenced his Brass Band life at an early age with Stenalees Band, having been taught the Cornet by his father. He soon became a member of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, progressing to the Principal Cornet seat, a position held for 4 years. In the Cornwall Youth Band he played under Dennis Wright, TJ. Powell, Eric Ball, Malcolm Arnold and Geoffrey Brand. Brian was invited to join the St Dennis Band in 1962 and played with them for a period of almost 20 years, during the ‘Eddie Williams’ era when they were the top Band ill The West of England. He progressed to position of Principal Cornet and later the Band’s Solo Euphonium, playing with them at Belle Vue in The British Open on three occasions and at The National Finals in The Royal Albert Hall on numerous occasions, being the Solo Euphonium Player in 1978 when the Band gained its 6th place. For a short while in the 1970’s Brian was the Bandmaster at St Dennis. 1 le is proud of his 4 Prince of Wales medals, specially minted each time a Band gains a hat trick of Rnya I Trophy wins at the Bugle Bandsmens Festival. In 2001 he was appointed Musical Director of St Dennis Band and has achieved considerable Contest successes.
