THE BAND St. Austell is one of the beauty spots of Cornwall, and will be known to countless thousands of holidaymakers, but how many are aware that this town possesses one of the finest bands in the U.K. They are a band of amateur musicians whose one delight is to give pleasure to their listeners and thoroughly enjoy music for the art’s sake. Their ability will be unquestionable when you have listened to the musicianship contained in this disc. They were originally known as St. Austell Volunteer Band from the time they were reported to have been started in the late nineteenth century until after the 1914-18 war, when they became St. Austell Silver Band, and then in February 1971, The St. Austell Band. Their up-to-date achievements include South West Bands Association Champions five times in the last six years.

THE MUSIC “White Heritage” is the signature tune (which incorporates Cornish Floral Dance, etc.) of this famous Cornish Band, and as newcomers to the field of recording it introduces them to the listening public at large on this disc. The solo spots are filled by J. D. Maines (Trombone), A. Helleur (Horn), V. Hawkey (Euphonium).
The trombone and euphonium solos are entirely new compositions, performed and recorded for the first time, and are from the pen of George Doughty (of Grandfather Clock fame), and the horn solo is Rondo from the Horn Concerto No. 4 by Mozart, arranged by Derek Jordan. Especially interesting is the original hymn tune “Cornwall” written by Ernest Floyd A.R.C.O., an erstwhile organist of St. Ives Parish Church, just having retired after 40 years of service. He has been blind since the age of seven and was educated at Exeter Blind School passing all grades of the Associated Board for Piano and taking his A.R.C.O. Diploma. The words he attributes to this beautiful tune are “Jesus shall reign where e’r the Sun”. Two major works are included, Granville Bantock’s “Prometheus Unbound” (after Shelley) and a particularly brilliant arrangement by George Hawkins of Ballet Music to Faust. This is in three movements (a) Waltz, (b) Ensemble, (c) Dance of Nubians. Prometheus Unbound will be remembered as the test piece in the most important contests in the U.K. and is played expertly on this disc. This particular arrangement of Faust Ballet Music will not be known to bandsmen; it is a special arrangement made for Fred Roberts by that grand old gentleman of brass band music, George Hawkins. Altogether this is a record of very fine music, and the playing will delight listeners whether they are brass band enthusiasts or not. The programme content is built up to please everyone. F. J.
