The Radford Charitable Trust was formed in 1970 with funds provided by Maisie and Evelyn Radford. The objective was, and still is, to advance musical education and to help musicians in Cornwall realise their musical potential and not be held back by lack of opportunity.
This has been achieved in a variety of ways: bursaries have been provided for tuition and for help with advanced studies, loans and grants have been made for the purchase of better instruments for advanced students, and orchestral courses and workshops have been held for players of all stages in their development.
The Trust’s name derives from the Radford sisters who moved to Cornwall in 1911. They formed the Falmouth Opera Singers in 1923 and led productions of classical operas. For many years they worked for the Cornwall Music Festival and brought music to communities throughout Cornwall.
Since it was set up, the Trust has helped thousands of young musicians of Cornwall by providing small financial grants, loaning them instruments free of charge, running workshops and supporting the Cornwall Music Festival.
