“Hi Tony, Going through my old choir music, I have found a setting of a hymn tune called Lanner. It was composed by E J Williams for the Lanner Home Guard Choir by its founder and first Conductor. This must have been E J W senior. The copy I have was a re-printed as a special edition for the 100 years of Lanner exhibition in May 1994 by kind permission of Mrs L. Williams, Eddie jnr’s wife. You are welcome to have it.” Rodney Richards of St Dennis.
Lanner is one of a host of hymns dedicated to Cornish locations.
The hymn tune Lanner was written by E J Williams of brass band fame. Despite his wide involvement in conducting and composing in the world of brass band, however, it was left to another to arrange the piece for that medium. That person was Gareth Cottrell and the brass band version is included on this website under his name.
It is also interesting to see that T A Harvey was involved in arranging it for a mixed choir.
