Derek was born in 1945, in the little village of Earby. At that time it was in the historic West Riding of Yorkshire but much to his disgust, the boundary was moved and since 1974 it has been administered by Lancashire County Council. However, it still celebrates its Yorkshire roots and I can hear Derek saying, “And quite right too!”
At the age of ten, Derek joined Earby Prize Band, on tenor horn.
Within a handful of years, Derek was awarded an apprenticeship with Rolls Royce, a much sought after achievement. He thinks that being a bandsman may have helped but the company band wasn’t particularly good and it folded before he had even made it to the band room.
A career in the Grenadier Guards seemed attractive and in 1966 he signed on for nine years, on euphonium under Major Peter Parkes. After a year, Derek moved to the principal euphonium seat and life involved weekly tours of seaside locations playing two concerts a day.
Derek said, “Peter Parkes was a hard task-master but I enjoyed the life and at the end of my nine-year stint I signed for a further three years. However, after only one year, in 1976, I spotted an advert in the British Bandsman for a musical director at Camborne Town Band. It looked interesting so I thought I’d give it a go.
I travelled down for the audition which must have gone well because they immediately offered me the job. They even agreed to pay the few hundred pounds to buy me out of the Grenadier Guards so I accepted the position.”
Derek Greenwood, Camborne Town’s new MD.
Derek’s first contest was at the West of England Bandsmen’s Festival at Bugle – a particularly Cornish event. It was probably not the start he wished for but later that year, he led the Band at the Reading Contest and they romped home in first place.

Camborne’s fortunes at Bugle changed in 1981 as they collected the Royal Trophy through a win playing the test piece Freedom and a second place with the march, Molinnis Park. St Dennis was second, St Austell third and Mount Charles fourth. But it could have been so different. Derek sustained a broken ankle a few days before the contest but rejected a high stool preferring to stand and conduct. He had always said he would never win Bugle because he didn’t have any clay on his boots and, according to Eric Trerise, someone** presented him with a paper bag of the stuff just before the contest and that did the trick.
** The gent that presented him with the bag of clay was Bert Buzza who was a proud supporter and president of St Austell Town Band. (Tracey Bristow)

5th November 1983: Camborne Town with the “1,000 Voices” Cornish choir at the Royal Albert Hall
This concert was clearly one of those events to which the epithet “I was there” should be attributed. An event where the clan gathered to produce an amazing concert and to celebrate their “Cornishness”. So much so that Roy Nancarrow of Camborne recalled Derek Greenwood saying that that he was so moved by the occasion that he wished he were a Cornishman. Whether or not Roy heard him correctly, and whether Derek would have repeated it in his native Yorkshire, is open to conjecture, but it’s a nice thought.
Derek was certainly in jocular mood when complaining to me that it finished so late that when they got back to the hotel, the bar was closed. He also recalled Harry Mortimer calling him Young Greenwood, a title which continued for years after.
In 1984 Derek and Camborne Town accompanied Brenda Wootton on her Paris tour. There were fourteen concerts in nine days – a live radio broadcast at 2.00am on Europel, a live television broadcast, a champagne reception, a concert in the Casino de-Paris, the Amnesty International concert and seven concerts at the famous Bobino Theatre.
The highlight had to be the Amnesty International Concert in the Zenithe Stadium with an audience of 6,000 people. Marcus Dunstan recalled, “We came on stage at midnight; the other performers were mostly rock bands but despite the type of concert we were well-received. One thing that really surprised me was how well known Brenda Wootton was in France; her name was plastered all over the place.”
Lester Ashton was the only player who could speak fluent French and became the compère for each concert. He proceeded to make gentle fun of the players and Derek Greenwood, which the French audience loved and his colleagues could not understand. Apparently Derek managed to cause a bit of a stir when he went on French radio and referred to their beloved saxophone as an agony bag.
The first trip was so successful that Brenda invited the Band to accompany her again a few months later when the concerts were performed in the open air.
In 1985 Derek left Camborne Town and took up the position of musical director at St Austell Town where he remained until 1987.

In April 1989 the British Bandsman reported that St Dennis Silver were advertising for a musical director. The following November it announced: “New Conductor for St Dennis”, stating “The St Dennis organisation in Cornwall has appointed Derek Greenwood as conductor of the senior and junior bands. He took over about seven weeks ago after leaving St Austell Band.”

In the mid-1990s Derek headed west to take charge at St Keverne: his name appears on the band’s Musical Directors Board from 1996 to 2004. Under his direction both the senior and youth band enjoyed considerable success.

In 2002 Derek Greenwood returned to Camborne Town as MD but only in a temporary role.
In November 2006, former Camborne Town players Alan Toy and John Phillips used all their considerable charm and persuasive skills to assemble a band of past players for a reunion concert at Pool Business & Enterprise College. Former MD, Derek Greenwood, conducted and Past Secretary, Robert Seymour, compèred when 68 former players re-lived their banding days to take part in a sparkling concert. With only three rehearsals, and with instruments borrowed from Penzance and Redruth Bands, they took their place on the concert stage once again and played their hearts out to entertain the audience to raise over £1,100 for the band room appeal. Former principal cornet Robert Tanner, Kevin Goninan, Andrew Kemp, Paul Bilkey, Richard Knight and James Knight had travelled from outside Cornwall to take part and when the blowing had finished, former flugel player, Jack Pascoe, told them, “You may not have played for a few years, but you certainly haven’t forgotten how to… I wouldn’t have missed it for anything!” The audience were amazed by the tremendous sound as the veterans played ‘Old Comrades,’ ‘Zampa,’ ‘You Raise Me Up,’ ‘The Cossack,’ ‘Great Soul,’ ‘An American Trilogy,’ ‘Washington Grays,’ ‘Die Felsenmuhle,’ ‘Nimrod,’ ‘Music,’ ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’ and ‘Slavonic Rhapsody No. 2’. Taking part were:
Cornets: Leonard Adams, Sarah Bateman, Reg Bennett, Paul Bilkey, Desmond Burley, Monica Dean, Marcus Dunstan, Alan Faraway, Kevin Goninan, Darren Hendy, Ian Hooper, Sharon Hooper, Norman Johns, Clyde Keverne, James Knight, Monty Ray, David Read, Jeremy Squibb, Chris Parkin, Alan Pope, Karen Pritchard, Robert Tanner, Stephen Trelease, Barrie Trevena and David Whear.
Tenor Horns: Graham Barker, Elaine Bray, Wayne Brown, Andrew James, Richard Knight, David Pascoe and Neil Rutter.
Baritones: Audine Button, Terry Sleeman, Rachel Squibb and Edwin Willcocks.
Trombones: Lester Ashton, Alan Caddy, Adrian Dower, Kevin Dower, David Nicholas, David (Diddy) Nicholas, John Phillips and Andrew Teague.
Euphoniums: Courtney Berryman, Mark Bray, John Hitchens, Andrew Kemp and Alan Toy.
Eb Basses: David Coad, Tim Joslin, Russell Kellow, Michael Prichard, Terry Tonkin, Michael Weeks and Ashley White.
Bb Basses: George Ansell, Phil Blake, Jonathan Bond, Jason Smith, Eric Thomas and Lee Trewhella.
Percussionists: Nigel Chadd, Mike Hocking, Andrew Tellam and Stephen Weeks.
The evening concluded in true Cornish fashion with a few drinks and a pasty.
Derek Greenwood has the distinction of winning the Royal Trophy at the West of England Bandsmen’s Festival with three different bands: Camborne, Mount Charles and St Austell.
He was a tutor with the Cornwall Youth Brass Band from 1977 to 1997, the latter years as senior tutor. He led the 1993 tour of Austria and was course leader from 1994 to 1997.
1992: Micky Hunt (Chairman of the Cornwall Brass Band Association) presenting Albert Chappell and Derek Greenwood with the Brass Band Shield of the Cornish Gorsedh (Weryson Menestroughty Brest) for outstanding achievement in the field of Cornish Music.

Apart from his involvement in the CYBB, Derek taught brass band at Truro School and in 2000 he was awarded the Mortimer Medal for his work with youth bands.
Derek has also adjudicated at a number of brass band contests.
Of course, brass banding is not just about contests but surely amongst Derek’s most satisfying moments must be the two fourth places in the National Championships and the first place in the Yeovil Entertainment contest.
Back in 1976 Derek Greenwood applied for a position in a Cornish band: since then he has made a huge contribution to the Cornish brass band movement.
