The Cornwall Youth Brass Band had its beginnings in 1955. It has enriched the lives of so many young musicians but countless other folk have also been involved, some as tutors and others in administrative roles. Their contribution is acknowledged and recognised.
My thanks go to all of the organisations and individuals, whether named or not, who have provided information and photographs for this archive.

1954
In 1954: “A course for young brass players has been arranged for Saturday, 30th October, in the Girls County School, Truro. The tutors being Mr F J Roberts, Camborne, and Mr F E Moore, St Agnes. Full particulars can be had from Mr W Pearson, County Music Adviser, County Hall, Truro.” (Camborne Town Band Contest programme 11th September 1954)
It is suggested that it initially attracted 25 players. (“The Cornwall Youth Brass Band 1955 to 1993” by Willoughby King)
1955 – 1958
1955 to 1979: Frank Moore Secretary.
1959 to 1983: Reg Trudgian Chairman
Cornwall County Youth Brass Band was formed and for the first four years it was divided into two groups: the seniors led mainly by Fred Roberts of Camborne, and the training group led by Frank Moore of St Agnes. These two men were significant in getting the organisation off the ground.
1956: The CYBB played at the Bath and West Show at Launceston.

1958: “Although reports of several fine concerts each year continued, a decision taken in 1958 was to see a change in organisation which would not deviate too much over the following years. This was to amalgamate with the Cornwall Brass Band Association in an attempt to extend the youth band on a much larger basis, maintaining as high a standard of music playing as possible.
A constitution was signed, the objectives of which were ‘to provide facilities, by means of monthly rehearsals and annual courses, under professional musicians and conductors, and the study by members of the band of music in all its branches’. An audition panel, consisting of some of Cornwall’s finest conductors, was set up in a bid to travel the length of the county hearing and selecting young bandsmen and women.” (“The Cornwall Youth Brass Band 1955 to 1993” by Willoughby King)
1958: The Cornwall Music Advisor, Mr W Pearson, invited the famous conductor, Dr Denis Wright, to a meeting at the Red Lion in Truro to discuss how to give the band added impetus. This discussion led to the decisions to combine the two bands and to offer members an annual residential course. We do not have a list of those who attended the meeting but Frank Moore was certainly there and was to become an important figure as the band moved into the second phase of its life which was to be under the umbrella of the Cornwall Brass Band Association. Either at this meeting, or shortly after, Cecil Brewer, Edgar Floyd and Eddie Williams came on board as tutors.

1959 to 1967: C L Hender Treasurer
August 1959 Residential Course at Pentewan under Dr Denis Wright
“The first event for the re-constituted band was a residential course, in 1959, at Pentewan. It was held under canvas, a feature which the course director, Dr Denis Wright, did not feel was conducive to good music making. Despite that, it was well-received and provided a foundation for an annual event. The next few courses were held at St Austell Grammar School but it was probably due to Frank Moore’s brass band teaching involvement at Fowey School that the courses moved to there in 1963 and for the next 15 years the band was welcomed by headmaster Ken Eglin. Later, there were two courses each year: during the Easter and Christmas school holidays.” (Tony Mansell)

1968
Easter 1968 Residential Course & Concert at Fowey School under Malcolm Arnold
1968 with Sir Malcolm Arnold (Photo: Grindley Studios)
“…these 70 young people have given me more than I have given them”. (Malcolm Arnold)
1968: “I have many happy memories of my time in the Cornwall Youth Brass Band and will always be proud to have been a member. As is the case today, the young players of that era were drawn from many Cornish brass bands. Membership presented them with the opportunity to make lifelong friendships and to play under the tutors and major figures from both the brass band and the orchestral worlds. And what a privilege it was – a unique opportunity afforded them by a group of men who asked for no other reward than the satisfaction of helping young people make music.” (Tony Mansell)
