13th April 2013: One hundred boys to raise voices in song across Cornwall.
One hundred boys will be setting out on two buses from either ends of Cornwall on May 4 to bring a day of song and celebration to towns and villages along their way.
The choirs will converge on the International Male Voice Choral Festival’s competition audience at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro.
The singing odysseys of the Cornwall Boys and Cambiata Cornwall choirs will begin at Land’s End and Saltash at 10.30am and will involve pop-up concerts along their routes joining male choirs in towns and local festivals in Penzance, Liskeard, Hayle, Falmouth and St Austell before meeting to perform together on Truro Piazza Lemon Quay.
They will then be singing in the Hall for Cornwall to audience awaiting results of the day’s international singing competitions, ahead of the International Male Voice Choral Festival international gala concert which involves choirs from Germany, Finland, three Welsh choirs, Bristol and Truro City’s own Male Choir.
“Boys on a Bus” is funded by Cornwall Music Education Hub as part of the festival, the largest event of its kind in Europe, which involves 60 choirs of all ages and nationalities in 50 concerts and celebrations in 40 venues across the county running from May 2 to 6.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our young singers to show off their talents right across Cornwall as well as for audiences from Cornwall and right across the world to hear the uplifting sound of young voices in the great outdoors,” said festival director Peter Davies.
The “Boys on a Bus” tour will come hot on the heels of the festival’s inaugural International Youth Gala Concert at Truro Methodist Church on May 2 at 7pm, where both choirs will be joined by Dagilelis from Lithuania, the St Petersburg Boys Choir and The Scholars from Truro Cathedral. The evening will also see a special guest set by The Macquarries – a father and two sons playing folk arrangements for violin, guitar and xylophone.
During the festival 3,000 singers will be performing throughout five days and nights to more than 30,000 people, with voyagers including Australians Russians, Finns and Lithuanians as well as those closer to home from Wales, Scotland and of course Cornwall itself.
