St Keverne is a civil parish and village on the Lizard Peninsula
1886: The Band website states that St Keverne Band was founded in 1886, mainly from the workforce of the two local stone quarries of Porthoustock and Dean Point.
1888: The Rival Bandsmen of Meneage or He Who Collars a Man and Gets Knocked Down is Rightly Served” was the heading in the Cornishman newspaper when reporting an assault case heard at the West Kerrier Petty Sessions. Roughly what happened was that there was a festival held in St Keverne when the Porthalla Band was engaged to provide the music. St Keverne Band had usually played at this event, but not this time, although several of their members turned up for a day out. The Lizard Band had had the nerve to bring their instruments but was not allowed to perform. During an interval, whilst the Porthalla players were having their tea, Richard Jose, John Tiddy and Mr Chiddock of Lizard Band were laughing together and jeering at the members of the other two bands. William Scobie of St Keverne Band remonstrated with them upon which Jose grabbed him by the collar. Scobie floored him with a punch to the side of the head rendering him unconscious for several minutes. That was the end of fracas and at the subsequent court session the case was dismissed and each party had to pay their own costs, estimated at being not less than £3. 1893 to 1918: William Martin, St Keverne Band MD. (St Keverne Band Musical Directors’ Board)
“My great grandparents moved from Eglosderry Farm above Loe Bar in the early 1890s to Tregaminion Farm in St. Keverne. William Martin (my great grandfather) was musical and founded the St. Keverne band in 1896. He may have started a band at Porthallow before that but, if he did, it never got off the ground. He then turned to St. Keverne. He was the first MD (1896-1918). When he retired his son, John Martin (my grandfather), took over and was the MD until 1935. William Martin played the euphonium and John Martin the cornet. My father joined the band in 1922 (that’s how he met my Mum – she was John Martin’s daughter) and played the cornet. He left the band in 1935 when my grandfather retired. From 1910 until 1925 the band practiced in the Ark (the chapel Sunday school, formerly a UM chapel). Interestingly enough, both my parents’ families were musical – singers and bandsmen. My father was a first tenor but could also sing second bass, my grandfather Martin a first tenor, my grandmother Martin a contralto and my mother a first soprano. I disappointed my parents by singing bass – my father had hoped for a tenor! My Nicholls ancestors on my mother’s side were also musical – my 3rd great grandfather played the bassoon to accompany the singers at St. Keverne Church. Then in the 1820s they changed over to chapel – my great grandfather William John Nicholls was the organist there for 30 years (until about 1902) and my mother the organist from 1963 until 1996. My father was behind the founding of St. Keverne MVC and my mother the pianist (1945-1996). They both retired in 1996 (both in mid/late 80s). As an aside, they delivered meals on wheels to old folk until they realised that the recipients of the meals were all younger than they were – they were mid 80s when they stopped doing this.” (Terry Moyle)
