City Hall, Truro
Not all bands enter competitions and there are some which shun the contest stage, preferring to concentrate their efforts in providing music for local events. For most players, though, contesting has always been an important part of brass banding, the reason that they spend so many hours trying to perfect their art. It provides them with the opportunity to test their musical skills against others and, of course, to bring home that silverware.
This section includes brass band contests which have taken place in Cornwall. I doubt that all are here, and there are certainly some results missing, but, over time, it is hoped that it will become a comprehensive record of all Cornish Contests.
The Cornwall Brass Band Association was formed in November 1955.
Its contest commenced in 1956 and became established in Truro. Despite often being referred to as “Truro Contest” it has been held at various venues around Cornwall. Its competition was restricted to member bands and whilst quite a few joined, the number taking part in the early contests was poor. Despite that, the West Briton headline was, “First Band Festival at Truro was a Great Success”.
The 1956 event was held in the City Hall, Truro. It is difficult to find too many superlatives about the old hall; the toilets and changing rooms were in a terrible state and the new Hall for Cornwall is superior in every way. And yet, when I think of this contest, my mind goes back to the City Hall, a venue of happy memories and associations.

There were only two bands in the Championship Section and Camborne was declared the winner, just ahead of Truro City. Camborne’s “own-choice” test piece was Mendelssohn’s Music, the same piece that was used at Bugle Contest that year.
A 16-year-old cornet player won the best-player award; it was the start of John Berryman’s hat-trick of wins at this particular contest.
The conducting for the evening concert was shared by, W D Lawton of Bodmin Town – a former member of Foden’s Band, Alwyn Teasdale of Truro City – a former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and the St Hilda’s Brass Band and Fred Roberts of Camborne Town Band. The Cornwall County Youth Brass Band also took part and 12-year-old Monica Orchard played a cornet solo.

Only six bands competed which must have been a great disappointment for the organisers and for the public. It was felt that petrol rationing had affected practice sessions but there must have been serious misgivings in the minds of the committee members. It was Camborne verses Truro City again in the top section and in the test piece, Themes from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; the result was the same as in the previous year with Camborne receiving 98 points for an “outstanding performance”. The surprise came when the result for the Open March Section was declared. Truro City took first place and Camborne was not in the first three.
There was an evening concert by St Austell Town, Bodmin Town and Truro City.

Normal service was resumed in 1958 when Camborne took first place for the test piece and the march. The West Briton declared, “Camborne Supreme at Festival” and the adjudicator, Bert Sullivan – Bandmaster of Munn & Felton’s Works Band – had these remarks for Camborne’s performance of Coriolanus. “Thank you very much for a wonderful performance. It was exceptional all through – really first class playing. I could tell without a doubt that there was a musician at the helm.” John Berryman completed his hat trick, winning the Roberts Trophy.

Taking account of the success of the past few years St Agnes Band moved up to the Championship Section in 1968 when the test piece was the Grand Selection, Tchaikovsky. They were competing against the mighty St Dennis and Bodmin Town and were placed third out of the entry of three. They were, however, only two points behind the second placed band and fully justified their promotion.

1969 could well be referred to as the St Agnes Band’s zenith as it was the year that they won the championship section against formidable opposition. Playing the test piece Eroica, they overcame St Dennis, Indian Queens and Bodmin Town to achieve a result which was the culmination of an amazing period of improvement and consistency throughout the 1960s. Never again would they achieve these heights and the success preceded a fall in fortune equally as dramatic as their climb. It is almost anti-climactic to say they were placed second behind St Dennis in the open concert section but I will do so for the sake of completeness.

For the first time for many years Camborne Town competed in the 1972 contest and took first place over Mount Charles with their playing of Blackfriers by E Cundell. The adjudicator, John Harrison, once the Musical Director at St Dennis and Falmouth, used such comments as “brilliant and dynamic” and “out of this world”. The Band also won first prize in the concert contest and Neil Peters (euphonium) won the best soloist award. Some excellent comments were received from the adjudicator who said, “What can I say but praise for the execution”.

In 1973 the test piece was “own-choice” and Camborne chose to play Triumphant Rhapsody and took first prize in a section of five bands with Jack Pascoe (flugel) winning the best soloist award. With the complaint that they had played with a little too much show-band forcefulness in the Concert Contest the Camborne players had to be content with second place behind a superb St Dennis Youth Band. The Camborne “B” was placed third. There was a word of warning from adjudicator Wesley Johnstone to the female players, “You should not cross your legs, no matter how nice they are. It is not only distracting for the men but it also affects your breathing”.

With no other top section band taking part in the Grand Evening Concert, Camborne was the clear winner.

Having played Rienzi at the Area Championship in March 2005, it was decided to use it again for the “own-choice” contest at the Hall for Cornwall on the 9th April. The only challenge came from Lanner & District (ex-Camborne player Stuart Chappell) playing the Land of the Long White Cloud. Camborne (Lt Col C Davies) was on top form and a very measured and exciting performance brought the Band the title of Cornish Champions. Robert Jose (euphonium) was outstanding and took the titles of Best Instrumentalist in the Championship Section, the Roger Moyle Memorial Trophy for the Best Euphonium Player at the Contest and the Ivan Kessell Memorial Trophy for the best player at the Contest. The Peter Bailey Memorial Cup for the Best Set of Basses at the Contest went to Camborne – Eric Thomas, Tim Joslin, Kevyn Caddy and Jason Smith – and the E C C Revue Society Shield for the Best Cornet Section to Chris Leonard, Ian Hooper, Mark Leigh and Robert Sandow.
A young lady, Kayleigh Rowe, of St Dennis Youth made an outstanding contribution to her band’s pole position in the Youth Section and its second place in the Open Entertainment Section when it was only headed by Camborne. She also collected the Brian Richards Memorial Cup for the Best Cornet Player at the contest and the Cecil E Brewer Memorial Shield for the Best Soloist in the Youth Section.
Led by the inspiring Lt Col Chris Davies, Camborne’s performance in the Entertainment Section was outstanding and included a feast of entertainment and superb playing. Steve Thomas (euphonium) still had one more thing to celebrate; he also conducted Newquay Band as it collected the title of Cornish Third Section Champions.
