True to its Celtic tradition Cornwall is a county of fine choirs. By common consent and by its national and international record of success the Treviscoe Male Voice Choir has emerged as the finest flower of a rich soil. Its home is a village in the heart of the Cornish “Alps–the China Clay Area near St. Austell. The Choir was founded in 1936 and made an immediate impact on the Cornish musical scene. The Second World War caused a temporary suspension of activities. During the fifties they had great success in the International Eisteddford at Llangollen, including the outright championship; in the sixties they continued on the path of success with honours awards on occasions such as the Blackpool Musical Festival and becoming the British Male Voice Choir Champions in the B.B.C. Competition -Let the People Sing”. In recent years they have added television appearances to their regular broadcasts. Throughout the Choir’s history the members have aided many good causes and contributed thousands of pounds to charity.
This post-war flowering of the Choir was under the inspired baton of its founder, Mr. W. J. Russell Kessell, whose wife, Mrs. Melba Kessell, was their gifted accompanist. Mr. and Mrs. Kessell retired in 1969 but the Choir has always been able to draw upon good friends and the talents of the area. Their present conductor, Mr. Kenneth Yelland and the present accompanist, Mrs. Inez Bilkey, maintain the tradition. Typical of their attention to detail was the mastery of other languages when the need arose. How many English choirs have sung in Welsh in Wales or got more marks than German choir when singing a Mozart canon in German! The Treviscoe Choir’s repertoire spans the centuries from Palastrina to Armstrong Gitli and from Cornish hymns to Negro Spirituals. In this record—their third—the Choir accedes to popular requests and gives pleasure to all lovers of singing and Cornwall.
