Six young Penzance men: Walter Barnes, E A Gordon Rogers, George H. Shakerley, Alfred W Robinson, Barrie B Bennetts and Osbert Howarth, formed themselves into a musical ensemble called The Clefs.
1906: The six members of Clefs formed the Penzance Amateur Orchestra.
1906: Walter Barnes, Musical Director.
7th April 1907: Penzance Amateur Orchestra’s first public concert – at St John’s Hall.
March 1937: Although a talented violinist, Walter Barnes played the violin at only one concert given by the orchestra – in celebration of their 30th anniversary.
November 1941: Walter Barnes’s last concert.
1942: Walter Barnes died.
1941: R J Maddern Williams, Musical Director.
1946: J Morgan Hosking, Musical Director.
23rd April 1981: J Morgan Hosking’s last concert.
November 1981 to April 2001: David Ball, Musical Director.
Circa 1981: Joyce Preston, Orchestra Leader.
1993: J Morgan Hosking died.

Judith Bailey, Musical Director. Judith was born in Camborne and has published a large number of compositions for orchestra and instrumental ensemble.
