Come here, you lads, wanting to go away Into a land far overseas, here’s something that’ll interest you! Into a land far overseas, let’s go into those lands, CHO And let’s lie down by the river where good waters run, And the buffalo in the wilds, we shall hunt them! 2. Come here, you girls, and spin some yarn, And make some clothes for us, so that our luck won’t fail: And we shall have joy, I tell you this: CHO 3. There are plenty of fish in the river for our nourishment, if it pleases, And tall sugar-cane to give us sweet juice: There are buck and doe, and other game besides: CHO 4. The Indian warriors, if they venture closer, We shall stand together, and chase them far away: We’ll get our guns, mates, to pay off those devils, CHO |
NOTE. Tony Snell: “I can’t recall the source of the tune: might it have been the singing of Cyril Tawney perhaps? But this tune is v. similar to the one in Sabine Baring-Gould’s collection, which was noted down from J. Benoy at Menheniot, also from the singing of James Olver, Launceston, and James Parsons. A version, with tune similar to the one I use, appears as ‘Chase the Buffalo’in Canow Kernow, ed Inglis Gundry, pub. The Federation of Old Cornwall Societies (1966), p 50.”
