Well, this poster promises “A Great Day” at Goonown (St Agnes) which was, no doubt, very memorable because the men were doing the work – no doubt under the watchful eyes of the ladies!
We are grateful to the organisers for including the full date (1910): the year is often left off, much to the irritation of historians.
The cost of the event seems modest and we hope that the good people of Goonown enjoyed their day.
What we are after, however, is some information about the Mount Hawke String Orchestra whose members were performing on the day. We note that there were violin solos so it is clearly a proper orchestra and not a brass band maquerading under that name.
Mount Hawke has few mentions in this archive (even the existence of a brass band is in doubt), so some information or photographs will be greatly appreciated. Perhaps there are comments that you remember from the “old folk” of the village or maybe there are some photos tucked away in your cabinet drawer. No matter how little and seemingly unimportant, we’d love to hear from you.
