Keur Heb Hanow Small choir singing traditional Cornish carols and songs exclusively in the Cornish language. In 2012, some members of the Heamoor Cornish Language class wanted to support a new class at the Cornwall Music Festival for traditional Cornish Carols. So, Sarah Tresidder persuaded some members of the class to get a small choir together for that purpose. And, because we were a Cornish language class, we decided to sing in our own language. We had to persuade some friends and family to help us as well, and so the choir was formed. Our nameless choir. We were unable to decide on a suitable name, so Sarah wrote on the festival application form, ‘Keur Heb Hanow’ (Choir without a name) and we never looked for another. We were also fortunate to find two talented musicians, Pippa and Mary, to support us on the piano and the flute. We didn’t win the competition but we were runners-up in our class and we were pleased with that. We hadn’t intended to do any more than that, but another choir at the festival, Tereba Nessa, organised by Ray and Denise Chubb, invited us to join them and the Tregajorran Singers to sing at a Cornish carol concert that Christmas at Bridge chapel. It was a great evening and we were encouraged to carry on singing together. And continue we did, but we’ve never sung anything in English or any language other than Cornish. Since then, we have won the Old Cornwall Shield three times in the traditional Cornish carols class and recorded two CDs. And, as there are not many choirs who sing only in Cornish, we have been invited to take part in some interesting events. For example, in 2016, along with several other Cornish choirs and music groups, we were fortunate enough to sing in Truro Cathedral as part of a special concert organised by Tony Jasper to celebrate the music of the Wesley family. And in 2019, Tehmina Goskar, while examining some papers in the Morrab Library, found by happy accident, the manuscript of a song written in Cornish by Robert Morton Nance and Ralph Dunstan which had not been seen since its first performance in 1932. Called ‘An Balores’ (The Chough), it appears to be part of a short play of the same name written by Nance himself. Tehmina organised a special event at the library where the score was discovered and invited us to perform the song. It’s wonderful to sing something written in the Cornish language but usually, we have to get hold of a translation of the original English words. We are grateful to many people for their excellent translations, and especially to our former teacher, John Parker for his help before his death in 2020. Other than that, we perform anywhere that Cornish speakers are to be found: at church services, carol concerts, Old Cornwall Society meetings; at the annual Cornish language weekend, Lowender Peran and Piran’s Day events, of course; and at weddings and funerals – but not yet at a bar mitzvah. We are glad to be able to support our language, and play a small part in keeping alive the songs of our country.
