1909: “Illogan Military Band has had the privilege of being the first Cornish Band to compete at the annual National Band Festival in the Crystal Palace. Sixteen of the principal reed bands in England and Wales competed this year for the “challenge shield,” and the Illogan band finished with only six competitors ahead of them. It was a good sample of Cornish “grit” that these villagers should have done a full day’s work on Friday, and then, within sixteen hours, should have travelled 330 miles and played their part in the competition on Saturday. The large audience at the Palace gave the band a very hearty round of applause at the conclusion of their performance. The Rev. H. Oxland, rector of Illogan, who has trained the band for more than 20 years, conducted at the competition. Mr. A. E. Dunn, M.P., sent a cordial invitation to the Rev. H. Oxland for the band to lunch with him at the House of Commons, but owing to their being delayed in drawing lots for the order of playing they had to remain at the Crystal Palace from noon till 3 p.m., and were therefore unable to enjoy Mr. Dunn’s hospitality, to their great disappointment. Our correspondent writes: “Considerable excitement prevailed in Paynters’-lane end on Sunday morning as to the result of the band contest, and there was much disappointment when it was learned that no prize had been awarded them. Still it was considered wonderfully good to do so well, and the Rev. H. Oxland is to be congratulated on the playing of his workmen’s band.’” (30 September 1909 – Cornubian and Redruth Times)
